Crosstown Parkway Extension Project

Crosstown Parkway Extension Project Receives United States Army Corps of Engineers Permit

PORT ST. LUCIE – The City is one step closer to beginning construction on the much-needed third bridge crossing of the North Fork of the St. Lucie River, a project that will provide numerous benefits to the community, including traffic congestion relief. The City of Port St. Lucie today, March 27, received the United States Army Corps of Engineers permit. This leaves the City one permit away from working on the critical bridge activities in the waterways and wetlands of the North Fork of the St. Lucie River.

The Army Corps of Engineers gave its approval of the project following the South Florida Water Management District’s Environmental Resource Permit, evaluating the application under a public interest review, as well as the environmental criteria set forth in the guidelines established by the agency. The remaining permit required is from the United States Coast Guard. Staff has been coordinating with the agency and expects the permit issuance soon. “We’ve traveled a long road to get here.

At last, it’s time to get to work on the outcome rather than the process,” said Port St. Lucie Mayor Gregory Oravec. “We look forward to the team delivering the bridge on budget and ahead of schedule, and we thank every team member and citizen who has helped moved Crosstown forward.” Construction is already underway for the project, including roadway and utility activities as well as preparing for bridge activities, pending the necessary permits. Project completion is anticipated in Fall 2019. The Crosstown Parkway Extension will provide a 6-lane divided roadway and linear park, with the bridge being approximately 4,000 feet, and will serve as a multi-modal transportation alternative that includes accommodations for automobile, bicycle, pedestrian and public transit.

The City of Port St. Lucie identified the need for a third east-west crossing over the St. Lucie River in 1980. The City and a majority of the community alike have clearly expressed excitement for the project and are ready to see the bridge become a reality. Earlier this month, approximately 390 people attended a Construction Public Information Meeting to receive updates on the project and ask questions regarding construction activities. If you missed the meeting, visit our project website, crosstownextension.com to see a video of the presentation provided by the project team and the questions asked by members of the community.
